Open-Water-DI

This is a sad, sad movie.  According to the true story, the couple was never found, so you know it’s going to be sad going in.  Still, it eats away at you quite a bit.  No pun intended.  It is genuinely tense and a little nauseating.  All the water moving up and down for more than an hour ended up getting to us.  And surprisingly, the already known fact that they don’t make it ended up getting to us.  The actors are good.  The dialogue is good.  Although DJ and I would never, ever be in that situation (DJ can’t swim and I’m a little afraid of the deep sea), we really felt for them.  We wanted them to make it even though we knew they couldn’t.

The movie was actually funny in parts though.  Not side splitting, but a few giggles here and there.  The movie also followed the rules of the sea.  It was very realistic.  It’s not rewatchable, but only because it was SO SAD!

Also, there is one bit of extremely bad news.  I always tell you all when dogs die because dogs are babies and I love them so.  Well, no dog dies, but at the end of the film, as the credits roll, there is a shark shown being butchered.  It is obviously a real shark.  It didn’t need to be.  I think the whole point is to show us the couple’s yellow camera come rolling out of the shark’s stomach, but that wasn’t necessary.  We get it.  They were probably eaten by sharks.  No need to butcher a beautiful animal in front of us to prove a point you’ve already proven quite effectively.  It lost some points for this.  From me and from DJ.

Altogether, we gave it a 51/100.  See it, don’t see it.  We can’t really say.  Just know what you’re getting yourself into beforehand.

“I don’t know what’s worse.  Seeing them or not seeing them.”

About TaraRomero

I love 28 Days Later and insist that they are zombies. Infected zombies, but zombies. It's not like they're coming back, are they? No. I also have a strange obsession with Brainscan because I have a stranger obsession with Edward Furlong (mostly pre-drugged up Edward - bless his heart, I've met him and he's lovely and I'll love him till I die). Besides horror I'm addicted to writing about everything I see and think and feel. Also, I read a lot and watch too many game shows. Currently reading Poe and watching Idiotest.
